COMPETITIONS

CONGRESSMAN BECERRA’S STUDENT ART COMPETITION– DEADLINE: Monday, March 7, 2016 at 5:00 P.M. Congressman Xavier Becerra invites you to participate in the annual 34th Congressional District Student Art Competition: An Artistic Discovery. To participate, you will need to submit an original art piece that will be judged by a committee comprised of local artists and community leaders. All artists will have their artwork exhibited at a local ceremony where the winner will be selected, and participants will receive a special congressional recognition. The winning artist will have their artwork displayed in the United States Capitol for one year and attend a special ceremony in Washington, D.C. More info at http://goo.gl/tBVFQe

LACMA TEEN NIGHT (FREE) – Saturday, February 13, 2016 | 7:30 pm. Take part in After Dark, LACMA’s teen-only bash, and enjoy a night of art and dancing under the stars. Explore the art of light and color in the exhibition Diana Thater: Sympathetic Imagination. Outside the galleries, participate in artist Caitlin Lainoff’s projection workshop and create a valentine for a loved one or friend. ART PROGRAMS

CAPSA – CAP SUMMER ARTS PROGRAM (FREE) –  Deadline: Monday, March 28, 2016 at 5:00pm. Study with faculty of the world-renowned California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)! CAPSA is a tuition-free program for currently enrolled students in grades 10, 11, 12, or seniors graduating in Spring 2016 (ages 15-18 only). Classes: Acting, Animation, Dance, Music, and Visual Arts. Program Dates: Monday – Thursday June 27 – July 14, 2016 10am – 5pmAPPLY NOW!

CSSSA – CALIF STATE SUMMER SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS  –  Deadline: February 29, 2016. We love csssa! This is a wonderful state subsidized art program run by the CA State University and held at Cal Arts in Valencia. Students get the ultimate experience of living in the dorms of a major art school. They have good scholarships. This is the best value in summer art programs. The program runs from JULY 9 – AUGUST 5, 2016. Applications take some time, so get started soon. CALARTS – FROM A TO ZINE (FREE)  –  Deadline: first-come, first-serve basis.REGISTER HERE! This 10-week writing and digital photography program is for high school students interested in creating zines, newspapers or books that relate to their experiences and their communities. Topics and layout design will be decided upon collectively and through a series of writing and photography exercises, students will incorporate the exploration of local community issues into their artwork. CalArts Photography and Writing professors teach the program, with the assistance of CalArts Student Instructors.

Whether you are already a passionate photographer or just beginning your photographic journey, this is your chance to be part of the world’s biggest photography competition.  FREE!  – worldphoto.org

SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS – Deadline: December 16, 2015. Time to make your Scholastic Art account and start creating the work you want to send to them. You can send any art made since January 2015.  Time to start thinking about this excellent opportunity to win money and scholarships. PTSA PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD – Deadline: December 14, 2015. The PTSA (Parent Teacher Association) has a yearly contest called Reflections for students. The theme for this year is “Let your imagination fly.” It is not required for the student to be a PTSA member and all other requirements are provided below. This is an event where students applying to art schools go and show their artwork to the schools they plan to apply to for portfolio review and feedback before they apply. It’s free to attend, and you can get lots of information about the schools at this event. Here is the link with a list of the schools attending: portfolioday.net

Participants’ work will be celebrated in public exhibitions at selected venues.  APPLY HERE!!

Class Times: Saturdays, 10:00am – 4:00pm / Dates: February 6 – April 16, 2016 / Location: CalArts, Photo Lab – Sublevel (24700 McBean Parkway, Valencia, CA 91355). Transportation provided from Grand Arts.

YOUNG ARTS – Deadline: October 14.  Young Arts gives millions of dollars in art scholarships each year. It’s open to all students at our school grades 9-12. To enter, you must make an online account and upload your images. Scholarships = Free Money. These are the biggest art scholarships available. Students may apply for a fee waiver to enter for free if they have filled out a lunch application as part of a Title 1 school.
