COMPETITIONS/ SCHOLARSHIPS

YOUNG ARTS – Deadline: October 16.  Young Arts gives millions of dollars in art scholarships each year. It’s open to all students at our school grades 9-12. To enter, you must make an online account and upload your images. Scholarships = Free Money. These are the biggest art scholarships available. Students may apply for a fee waiver to enter for free if they have filled out a lunch application as part of a Title 1 school. Get your lunch application in, even if you don’t want lunch, there are other benefits for the school such as fee waivers. More info at youngarts.org

SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS – Deadline: December 16. Time to make your Scholastic Art account and start creating the work you want to send to them. You can send any art made since January 2015.  Time to start thinking about this excellent opportunity to win money and scholarships. Many of our 10-11th graders have won summer classes at local art schools.  More info at artandwriting.org

FREE ART PROGRAMS

CENTER THEATRE GROUP – Deadline: September 22On three Monday evenings this fall, come together with other teens and professional artists to dive into a play from CTG’s upcoming season. Actors and directors will investigate scenes from the play, and costume, lighting, and scenic designers will get hands-on to develop design concepts as a team. On the last day, we’ll throw it all together, invite our friends, pitch our designs, and see what we’ve got! You don’t need any experience to participate. More info here.

CALARTS & SELF HELP GRAPHICS – Deadline: October 4. In this 20-week program for high school youth, students explore a multitude of disciplines while focusing on specific social issues. Participants may choose to collaborate with others in the class, or work independently to develop their own way of self-expression and make creative choices within the visual arts. Media includes but is not limited to various forms of printmaking, stop-motion animation, and digital video production.  Location: Self Help Graphics & Art (1300 East 1st St. Boyle Heights, CA 90033) Apply online here! 

EVENTS

VISUAL & PERFOMING ARTS COLLEGE FAIR– October 24 at UCLAThe event is free. There are metered parking lots with hourly rates, or all day passes for parking. This is a great event to find both art schools and universities with strong art departments and the booths distribute application and scholarship information. EXHIBITIONS & MUSEUMS

BROAD MUSEUM TICKETS & FREE MOCA MEMBERSHIP –The Broad Museum is opening! Get your FREE tickets here.  Also, if you attend during the first two weeks, you can go over to MOCA and turn in your ticket for a FREE MOCA MEMBERSHIP> $72. value!  Grand Arts students can always attend for free, but this could get you memberships for your family members, and it gets you invites to their opening parties. Miles Aldridge, 3-D, 2010

MILES ALDRIDGE: THE PURE WONDER – September 10 through October 17. The Fahey/Klein Gallery is pleased to present “The Pure Wonder” a retrospective exhibition featuring work by London based contemporary photographer Miles Aldridge. The exhibition includes large-scale photographic prints throughout Aldridge’s career. Reception for the Artist: Thursday, September 10, 7-9 pm. More info / Directions
